Here, Hinds takes creative liberties with the fantastic world of the original poem and the Anglo-Saxon fixation on water-dwelling beasts to insert a brief, but exciting encounter. Now that I have seen Santiago Garcia and David Rubin’s version, which gets at more of Beowulf’s story and captures more of the drama and power, I am inclined to say this is still good artwork, and maybe still the best I have seen of Hi When I initially read this it was the first graphic version of the epic tale that I had read.

All in all, an excellent work and a worthy edition to not only the educational body of gareht but also the casual reader. To translate Beowulf into a worthy graphic novel, one would need much more than Hinds’ pages.
